All About Louis Vuitton Microchips

In 2019 LVMH launched AURA,  a blockchain consortium platform that tracks their products.

Does Louis Vuitton still have date codes?

In Spring of 2021 Louis Vuitton did away with date codes in their bags and started using RFID chips.

What is an RFID Chip?

RFID stands for Radio-Frequency identification Chip. These are tiny microchips that store information and that information can be read with an RFID reader. It's like a name tag for the bag.

Who can read the Louis Vuitton RFID chip?

Only Louis Vuitton has the technology to read these chips properly and they can be read by the staff at the LV boutique.  However, that doesn't mean you can go to the boutique and ask a sales associate to read the chip in your bag.  They will only scan the chip in the event that you are returning the bag - so they can make sure the bag you are returning is the same bag you purchased from them.

What about chip reader apps?

These apps can tell you that there IS a chip in the bag and the type of chip in the bag. It's like a library  and the the chip reader is a librarian.  They can tell you there is a book in the library, and they can tell you what it looks like and if it's a hardcover, but they can't tell you the information in the book. Only LV can read what's actually in the book.

Do fakes have chips?

Yes, many newer counterfeit bags have microchips in them. RFID chips are very inexpensive (we're talking pennies) and many counterfeiters have begun adding chips to their bags. Usually a fake chip will show up on the reader with the same information as an authentic chip - it can look exactly the same a as a real LV chip.  The difference is - if you brought this fake bag to a Louis Vuitton boutique their scanner would show that it is indeed fake.

So how do professional authenticators authenticate bags with chips?

The same way we authenticate all LV items.  The date code (and now the chip) are just one small piece that we look for among a number of other indicators of an authentic bag.  Having the chip scan is just another box to check.
